Workpackages - EUROMBRA
Membrane bioreactor technology for advanced municipal wastewater treatment strategies
The EUROMBRA project is structured in 10 Work Packages as illustrated in the figure. Although MBR technology is currently available on a commercial level as an optional solution for treating municipal wastewater the development of the technology and industry is still in its infancy. In comparison with other membrane based technologies and applications, i.e. nanofiltration and reverse osmosis, there has been a very little degree of standardization within the MBR industry. MBR solutions that are available on the market today differ in many aspects related to choice of membrane material, module design, recommended operating modes and ranges, strategies to maintain a sustainable and economic operation, and footprint. The reason for this diversity is due to attempts in overcoming the challenges and bottlenecks found in MBR processes while making sustainable and economically sound process solutions. A key to the further development and standardization of the technology is having a better understanding of the challenges specific to the technology and finding efficient ways to overcome the bottlenecks. An overall goal of the EUROMBRA project is to improve the basis of MBR technology by integrating fundamental research and implementation of the new technology in the steps towards an established and standardized industry.
