Al-Baath University is one of the fourth governmental universities in Syria. It has 12 faculties and more than 2000 employees directly related to research or teaching. The Department of Chemical Engineering is one of the four departments in the faculty of Chemical and Petroleum Engineering.

The department is one of the biggest in the university, it has 10 professors, 16 associate professors and 10 assistants, 18 engineers and 14 technicians. There are fourteen laboratories for research and training of several disciplines within the chemical engineering science. The environmental and science section has a laboratory specialised in the analysis of water and wastewaters, polluted soils and air.Within Puratreat, Al-Baath University assists in the design of the laboratory set-up. It responsible for performing the characterisation of the different water streams of the system. In addition, ABU is in charge of assessing the oxygen uptake rate (OUR) and the actual oxygen requirements (AOR) within the bioreactor at the different operating conditions.
