New Energy Efficient Approach to the Operation of Membrane Bioreactors for Decentralised Wastewater Treatment

The Technologie-Transfer-Zentrum Bremerhaven (TTZ) is a German private non-profit research centre which comprises seven institutes for applied research and development (R&D), ranging from environmental research, process, engineering, bioinformatics to food technology.

Since its establishment, TTZ has successfully completed more than 4000 Projects at regional, national and international level. The majority of contracts come from small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). Its Environmental Institute (TTZ) is a well-known and established organisation with great expertise and extensive knowledge in the field of environmental technologies particularly in the field of energy, anaerobic digestion and environmental process engineering. TTZ has a long term experience in the field of aerobic wastewater treatment, in particular in the aspects involved in the air transfer to the reactors (air diffusers optimisation, air enrichment modellisation, etc). The TTZ role in the Puratreat project is to develop the control system for a laboratory bioreactor system and to study the influence of air bubble size and liquor rheology in the aeration of the Membrane bioreactor, operation, which has a major influence in the energy consumption of any aerobic wastewater treatment. In addition to these role, TTZ is the overall co-ordinator of the project. Its wide experience in the co-ordination of research projects will ensure efficient project management.
