Process optimisation and fouling control in membrane bioreactors for wastewater and drinking water treatment

Istituto di Ricerca Sulle Acque Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche (IRSA-CNR)
70123 Roma
Viale F. De Blasio 5
Italy

The Water Research Institute (IRSA) of CNR is the Italian government`s reference institution for water and wastewater treatment, water quality, and water resources management.

Research on membrane water treatments is presently focused on their applications for agricultural reuse of municipal wastewater and membrane bioreactors (aerobic and anaerobic). These activities are currently carried out with bench scale, pilot, and semi-technical experimental plants and are mainly aimed at process optimization, cost minimization, and MBR biomass characterization. Specific research is being performed on microbial growth/activity and sludge physical characterization. Planned activities on MBR include the evaluation of mixed liquor fractions with respect to their relationships with membrane filtration and applications for treatment of specific industrial wastewaters.
