Membrane bioreactor technology for advanced municipal wastewater treatment strategies

Delft University of Technology (DUT)
2600 GA Delft
PO Box 5048
Netherlands

The Section of Sanitary Engineering is part of the Department of Civil Engineering of Delft University of Technology. The cycle of water on planet Earth is the central focus point for Watermanagement. Watermanagement plays a dominant role in:

* environment (water and groundwater level)
* agriculture (irrigation and drainage)
* rural and urban area’s (drainage)
* drinking water supply
* wastewater collection and treatment

The main activities of the Sanitary Engineering Section are education and research in three core areas which form the basis of the 'urban water cycle', namely:

* Drinking water supply
* Waste water collection and urban drainage
* Waste water treatment

Good water quality for people and protection of the environment is the most important focus of attention.
To achieve this, knowledge of water chemistry, microbiology, water purification, water collection and water transport is essential.
During the design of constructive projects in sanitary engineering, the engineer uses basic knowledge of hydraulics, constructive modelling, information technology and project design.
Wastewater treatment is part of Sanitary Engineering. Head of this chair:

* Prof. ir. Jaap van der Graaf

The research in the field of waste water treatment is done by the following researchers:

* Fouling of membranes in a membrane bioreactor (MBR) for waste water treatment - Herman Evenblij, Adriën Moreau, Stefan Geilvoet and Maria Ferreira Concecao.
* Advanced wastewater treatment - Jaap de Koning
* Vivian Miska
* Physical-chemical pre-treatment of wastewater - Arjen van Nieuwenhuijzen
* Chemical and physical aspects of membrane fouling - Sandy te Poele
* Direct membrane ultrafiltration of municipal waste water - Aldo Ravazzini
* Ultrafiltration of waste water treatment plant effluent - Jelle Roorda
