Al-Baath University was established in 1979. It started with preexisting colleges and institutes such as the Faculty of veterinarian in Hama city and the High Institute of Chemical and Petroleum Engineering and the Faculty of science in Homs city. Al-Baath University is one of the four government`s universities in SYRIA and has 20 faculties. ,Five intermediate institutes, 26000 students and mor than 554 Faculty members working on their academic researches and Academic duties at their faculties and laboratories. The University enters into cultural agreements and contracts of sisterly relations with Arab and overseas countries. Research is strategic target of the university. It is administered in accordance with plan decided by various departments and approved by the sequential academic councils of the university. The aim of such research is to contribute to development in Syria.

The Faculty of chemical and petroleum engineering (FCPE) shall be:
1. The training of qualified engineers in the fields of chemical, petroleum, textile and food engineering. Graduates are to be provided with such knowledge and experience as is compatible with the progress of science and technology.
2. The participation in, and conduction of research and other studies relevant to the different departments of the faculty.
3. The development of teaching and research techniques including the publication of original and/or translated works and the use of unified terminology in the fields relevant to the faculty.
4. The organization of and participation in courses for follow - up training and further education.
5. The strengthening of cultural and scientific ties with Arab and foreign colleges and other scientific bodies.
6. The achievement of a higher level of cooperation with industry in order to bind the University effectively to the society at large.
The minimum period of study leading to the degree of Bachelor of Science shall be five years.The chemical engineering department has projects in the field of:
- Anaerobic biological treatment.
- Treatment of waste water from rubber industry and from the sugar industry.
- Municipal waste water treatment.
- Industrial waste water treatment.
- Waste water treatment with membranes
