The Pollution Research Group is a professional research organization with three permanent researchers and 30 post graduate students. It was formed in 1970 and specializes in water research. It has undertaken many research contracts for the South African Water Research Commission. It has close relationships with eThekwini Municipality and Umgeni Water and undertakes strategic research to support both organizations. It contributes to the formulation of government policy and to water and industrial development in Africa.
