Water Sciences at Cranfield University has conducted research into membrane bioreactors (MBRs) since 1991, initially in membrane aeration bioreactors, or MABRs and then more extensive studies of biomass separation MBRs. The latter have been supported through a combination of EPSRC sponsored programmes and wholly or partly industrially-funded research projects, alongside more recent EU-funded consortium projects. The work has generated over 50 peer-reviewed research journal and conference publications through 2005. |

Simon is the Director of Water Sciences. He has been on the staff at the School of Water Sciences since August 1992, and is currently Professor of Membrane Technology. He has managed almost all biomass separation MBR programmes conducted within the School, comprising 8 individual research project programmes and encompassing 9 doctorate students. He has been principal or co-investigator on three major UK research council-sponsored programmes dedicated to MBRs with respect to in-building water recycling, sewage treatment and contaminated groundwaters/landfill leachate, and also Chairs the Project Steering Committee of the EUROMBRA consortium project. As well as publishing extensively in the research literature, Professor Judd has co-authored two textbooks in membrane and MBR technology (Stephenson et al., 2000; Judd and Jefferson, 2003), with a third one due out in July 2006. Invited presentations at recent international membrane conferences have included three keynote papers. Professor Judd has also provided consultancy to clients based in Finland, Japan, Korea, North America, Switzerland and the UK, and is the organiser of the next IWA Membranes meeting in Water and Wastewater Treatment in Harrogate (May 2007). |
